2020 was a year that not only taught us patience, perseverance and tolerance, but it also helped us understand the value of things and people, we'd usually take for granted. It was a learning period that may have had it's cons but was full of pros too. That said, a new year or the 1st of January not only marks the beginning of a new calendar year, but also gives us the opportunity to look back all the mistakes we've made and the productive experiences we have gained. Cardi B Threatens Peppa Pig For Teaching Her Daughter To Jump In Puddles

Image
Cardi B ignited a new feud -- with none other than Peppa Pig. Cardi, real name Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, is no stranger to celebrity beef or a viral moment. The rapper rose to fame via social media, specifically Vine and Instagram, before being featured on VH1’s reality series Love & Hip Hop: New York. In 2017, she released her breakout single "Bodak Yellow," and went on to win a Grammy Award for her debut album Invasion of Privacy. In 2020, she once again proved her staying power with her Megan Thee Stallion collab WAP. But she also made some famous enemies along the way, most notoriously feuding with fellow rapper Nicki Minaj. Meanwhile, Peppa Pig is the main character in the beloved British animated children’s series of the same name. The show began airing in 2004 on Channel 5 in the UK, and now also runs on Nick Jr. in the US. Peppa has never won a Grammy, though she has feuded with a rapper before. Peppa's album came out on the same day as Iggy Aza

Until very recently, though, that wasn’t exactly true. Palm Beach’s focus on leisure travel meant fewer lounges than you’d find at an airport that caters to higher numbers of business travelers. Quarantine meals: The 2020 food trend no-one predicted

Image
It is now almost laughable, reading back the list of the foods we would all be excited in 2020. Seacuterie, anyone? Monk fruit syrup reductions, or CBD-infused macaroni? Indeed, the only trend that made it from this list of "foods to watch" compiled by our colleagues late last year is the alternative flours - but that is only because the supermarket shelf were stripped of the regular kind. However, I can guarantee none of them listed what I consider to be 2020's major food trend: the quarantine meal, eaten by those of us lucky enough to spend two weeks trapped in a hotel room. They were left outside our locked doors three times a day by a person we never saw. Across the world, people flew into quarantine facilities and were treated to mass catering which provided some truly weird and wonderful combinations - some of it good, some of it edible, and some of it best forgotten at speed. "It was a positive spin on airplane food," Henry Parham says of the

On the cards front, one primary focus was on a number of new benefits added to placate cardholders. After all, we were more likely to stay home and spend money on things that weren’t travel related. From new cards to new perks and even new ways to redeem points, 2020 kept The Points Guy credit cards team on its toes. But the story of credit cards in 2020 isn’t simply about the additions. Electricity sector records mixed performance in 2020

Image
Despite the sordid tales of Nigeria’s electricity sector, 2020 upstream power sector seems to have fared better in reducing systems collapse significantly. However, huge difficulties persists in stranded power incidences which has resulted in a steady rise in losses in the industry while ensuring the perennial issue of inadequate power supply to industries and homes throughout 2020. The power sector recorded five total collapses in 2020, as against 11 recorded in 2019. The year had started with two successive collapses which occurred in January, but the performance stabilized in the remaining 10 months to date with just three collapses. However, losses in Nigeria’s power sector rose to N619 billion in 2020, about 7.2 percent rise when compared to N575 billion recorded in 2019, due largely to the deficiencies in the nation’s power infrastructure. Kellogg Grad Student, Booth MBA Turn Love Into A New Venture

In 2018, Raj Kamaria met his now fiancée, Manali Shah, on the dating app Coffee Meets Bagel. They agreed to meet at a restaurant in Chicago; two years later, they got engaged. Kamaria, currently a Class of 2022 MBA student at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, and Shah, a Class of 2020 MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, quickly realized how labor-intensive it was to plan a South Asian wedding. “Typically three to five days in length, most cultural weddings are big affairs,” Kamaria says. “The average South Asian wedding costs $285,000. It’s a big industry, and it’s completely unorganized. There’s a lot of pieces of the pie; hotel venue, priest, henna artist, DJs and bands, food caterers, and more.” Overwhelmed at the extensive planning process, Kamaria and Shah realized the potential in making wedding organization easier. “Many of the vendors are first-generation immigrants who’ve opened up a restaurant or do henna on the side,

Cement price crisis deepens in states, Abuja

Image
Hopes of lower construction costs by prospective homeowners may have been dashed, going by fresh increase in price of cement and related products. The increase has already triggered ripple effect in the open market, where prices have gone up by as much as 60 per cent in recent weeks. The rising prices have also worsened construction costs in a sector, reeling under pressure from disruptive policies and ineffective housing supply. The Guardian investigation revealed that the export of the product to neigbouring countries, despite huge domestic demand, may be responsible for the shortage. The Federal Government recently granted Dangote Cement and BUA permission to transport products across the border, despite closure. Cement and by-products in neigbouring countries command higher prices. Distributors hinted that there was increase of ex-factory prices due to economic realities, which prompted many dealers to change prices. For instance, Dangote Cement increased its ex-factory

Turkey to Pilot Digital Currency in 2021, Says Central Bank Governor

Image
Turkey will begin piloting a previously undisclosed digital currency in the second half of 2021, the country’s chief central banker Naci Ağbal told members of parliament Friday. Turkish-language media widely quoted him as follows: “There is an R&D project initiated on digital money. Currently the conceptual phase of this project has been completed. We aim to start pilot tests in the second half of 2021.” Ağbal’s surprise comments place Turkey on the fast track to a central bank digital currency (CBDC). Turkey seldom discloses any digital currency ambitions; The Bank for International Settlements (BIS), known in monetary circles as the “bank for central banks,” does not even record Turkey as having an active CBDC project in its running database. Yet Turkey is now angling to overtake many better-known CBDC projects. Although 80% of central banks are considering CBDC according to the BIS, only a handful – Sweden, China, the Bahamas – have progressed to pilot phase/soft lau

Tierion to Repay ICO Investors Up to $25M Plus Interest in SEC Settlement

Image
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) ordered Tierion to pay back investors in its TNT tokens after finding the data verification startup’s $25 million initial coin offering (ICO) violated securities laws. TNT holders and ICO investors who sold their tokens at a loss have 60 days to ask Tierion for what is essentially a refund – at cost, plus interest. Node operators can sell their compensatory TNT back to Tierion for .01 cent plus interest. Tierion must immediately disable trading of its ERC-20 token, which runs on the Ethereum blockchain, under the settlement disclosed Wednesday. It will pay the SEC $250,000 in penalties. Tierion did not admit or deny wrongdoing, according to the SEC. The SEC also issued Tierion a Reg D waiver, meaning it won’t have to register future private placements of securities because it cooperated. The order effectively blows up 1 billion TNT tokens. At the time of its 2017 ICO, Tierion pitched them as the “method of settlement” betwee

Hong Kong ATMs Must Be Excluded From Coming AML Regulations, Group Says

Image
New anti-money-laundering (AML) regulations need to exclude Hong Kong’s bitcoin automated teller machines (ATMs) in order to sustain innovation, according to the Bitcoin Association of Hong Kong, reports the South China Morning Post (SCMP). Hong Kong regulators have stepped up their supervision of the cryptocurrency industry and are in the process of introducing new regulations that will restrict the city's digital currency trading by prohibiting them from serving retail investors. The government’s plan to regulate cryptocurrency exchanges in Hong Kong could mean ATMs may also be off-limits unless an appeal to exclude them from the extended regulations goes ahead, said the report. “Stricter oversight of bitcoin has created uncertainties for start-ups and their blockchain-related investments,” said Leo Weese, co-founder of the Bitcoin Association of Hong Kong, the SCMP reported. Weese added, “To restrict retail individuals from accessing bitcoin would be overshooting the

Japan Gearing Up to Launch Its Own Digital Currency: Report

Image
Japan is gearing up to launch a digital currency in both the public and private sectors as it trails China, which is in the trial stage of launching its own. According to the Japan Times, the country's Digital Currency Forum aims to create “some form” of digital currency similar to Facebook’s diem plan, by 2023. The group is preparing to conduct a feasibility study for its virtual currency in 2021. “China has prompted moves toward digital currency (around the world),” Hiromi Yamaoka, a former Bank of Japan official, told the Japan Times.  China has done so at "surprising speed" while "central banks tend to take a cautious stance,” added Yamaoka, who expects China to officially launch its digital yuan in 2022. China has been accelerating its push toward the adoption of a digital currency as the People’s Bank of China works with banks and commercial entities on public pilots to gauge user experience. In October the People’s Bank of China launched a pilot p

Crypto’s Big Rupture Is Coming in 2021

Image
After a crazy year with predictably strong growth in decentralized finance (DeFi) and store-of-value (SoV) crypto assets generally, things are about to get weird. Diversification is the only way to stay sane.  Crypto is set to bifurcate and we will begin to see two parallel economic superhighways being built and used. One economic superhighway will be for know your customer (KYC)-compliant “digital currencies” such as central bank digital currencies (CBDC) or corporate-backed digital currencies such as USDC or diem (formerly libra). This post is part of CoinDesk's 2020 Year in Review – a collection of op-eds, essays and interviews about the year in crypto and beyond. Previously, he was a Director at the Web3 Foundation and led the investment team at Polychain Capital, pioneering the SAFT as a legitimate investment instrument.  In parallel, the other economic superhighway will be a

MoneyGram Takes Wait-and-See Approach as SEC Sues Partner Ripple

Image
MoneyGram has yet to see any “negative impact” on its longstanding business arrangement with Ripple from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)’s lawsuit against the latter company.  “MoneyGram will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves,” a company spokesperson told CoinDesk in an emailed statement. “MoneyGram has continued to utilize its other traditional FX trading counterparties throughout the term of the agreement with Ripple.” The SEC alleged in a case filed Tuesday that Ripple used XRP, the cryptocurrency two of its founders created, to conduct an ongoing, $1.3 billion sale of unregistered securities. Ripple owns more than 4% of MoneyGram and paid MoneyGram $9.3 million in the third quarter of this year for providing liquidity for Ripple’s XRP-based cross-border settlement network. The best albums and songs of 2020: Fiona Apple, Cardi B, Bob Dylan and Dua Lipa

Phoebe Bridgers' sombre and sardonic Punisher came second, with Taylor Swift's Folklore taking third place. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's bass-heavy rap anthem WAP was named the year's best song. The track, which topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, had the most Googled lyrics of the year thanks to its gleefully explicit (and creative) attitude to sexual liberation. How the Most Stylish Guys We Know Are Dressing for a Very Different Holiday Season

Image
The holiday season, flush with yuletide cocktails, black-tie benefits and end-of-year soirees, is the annual Olympics of formal wear. But this year the party circuit will look very different. Which raises the question: Should you still get dressed up when there’s nowhere to go? “The definition of ‘evening’ has changed so much,” says Bruce Pask, men’s fashion director for Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus. Still, he thinks the impulse to spiff up remains as strong as ever. “Even if it’s dinner at a friend’s or the two of you at home, there’s something about honoring every occasion,” Pask says. It’s a sentiment shared by menswear consultant Tom Mastronardi, who has been suiting up even for the supermarket. These days, he says, an event is in the eye of the beholder: “For the love of God, if we’re not going out to a gala, make your own occasion. Uncork a bottle of something you’ve been saving, put on your best bib and tucker and do the deed.”
